Thursday at noon, an Air Force major flying a plane crashed into the north parking lot of the Super Shopping Mall near west edge killing the pilot and destroying 15 cars.

The Hattiesburg School board met Thursday morning and announced school enrollment is down for the third consecutive year by 200 students and, the assistant superintendent raised concerns saying, “The future looks bleak”.

Assistant superintendent Hoemmeldorfer also announced the new dress code rules as no mini skirts, no blue jeans, and male students cannot wear hair below their ears. All of the members of the school board were present to learn and now administer these new rules.

Thursday night a TWA jet crashed at takeoff at Kennedy National Airport killing five of the 45 passengers and crew on board, two Backwater University professors on board escaped without injury.

Both professors, John Dumont and George Johnson, were returning from seperate conferences on Thursday night when they boarded the jet.

Author Normal Meeman who won the Pulitzer Prize award for his book, “My Life as Far as it Goes” spoke at the William Oxley Thomson Memorial Library Sunday afternoon to a group of english students.

One memorable thing Meeman said during his speech was, “You can’t be a great writer by initiating the styles of prize-winning authors. You’ve got to get out and sample life, learn how other people live, and then let your inner feelings pour out.”

Last week an award ceremony in Pennsylvania was held for the annual George Washington Honor medal award, there were 32 winners including one professor for an essay called, “A Plan for Peace.”

Professor Clement Crabtree of horticulture wrote about distributing free packets of red, white and blue flower seeds in foreign nations.
